Job Title Assistant Scenery Director
Job Description

The Assistant Scenery Director participates in the organization and management of the Scenery and Paint Department for the Utah Shakespeare Festival (USF). He/she provides assistance to the Scenery Director (SD) by performing tasks necessary for the smooth operation of the department, including but not limited to budgeting, hiring, drafting, construction, maintenance, and striking of all scenic elements for productions at the USF. The Assistant Scenery Director works on the technical design of scenery and serves as a crew leader during load-in.

General Duties & Responsibilities

1. Work directly with Scenery Director and/or Scenic Designer in constructing and implementing the scenic design for all productions at USF.
2. Perform technical design and drafting for productions and department stock
3. Track budgets and purchasing for department productions and inventory
4. Oversee and maintain materials inventory, tools, and equipment
5. In conjunction with the SD, recruit and hire seasonal scenery staff including carpenters, welders, scenic artists, and run crew.
6. Independently supervise and assist crews during build, load in, and strike.
7. Ensure a safe and healthy working environment, and train crew in safety procedures where necessary.
8. Attend technical rehearsals, meetings, or note calls, as needed, and represent the scenery department when the SD is not present.
9. May be assigned to work as TD or Assistant Technical Director of one or more of the theaters during the summer and/or fall seasons.
10. May be assigned to work as TD of the educational tour or for other off-season scenery requests.
11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree in technical theater, or professional scene shop management experience required
2. Strong communication skills, and a collaborative, cooperative nature.
3. Ability to work under severe time pressures and meet deadlines.
4. Must have a good sense of humor.
5. Must possess a valid Utah driver’s license or be able to acquire one within 60 days of hiring. Ability to drive standard preferred.
6. Experience and skill in scenic construction techniques, principles, and practices including carpentry, welding, and rigging.
7. Experience and skill in technical design and drafting. Proficiency in AutoCAD required, Advanced in AutoCAD and AutoCAD 3D preferred.
8. Ability to collaborate with designers and directors, lead professional crews, communicate expectations and progress promptly and accurately.
9. Experience with rotating repertory theatre productions preferred.
