Job Description

SUU Head Start is seeking to fill this position for multiple counties: Iron, Beaver, Washington, and Millard.

Substitute/Teacher Aide serves as an on-call, long-term substitute teacher or classroom aide under the direction of Head Start Child Development Facilitator and Teacher I. This position assists with 17-19 three-to-five year old children.

In the role of long term Substitute, this position works as a team member with the Teacher I and functions as the Teacher II, assists with curriculum planning before and after class, and performs record keeping and ongoing assessment during class. This includes: doing circle time, singing with the children, handling transitions, reading stories, participating with children in learning centers, and assisting the teacher with behavior management.

In the role as Classroom Aide, this position serves as a third adult staff member in the classroom to assist with an individual child or group of children as required. This includes participating with children in normal class routines and helping with classroom activities as assigned by teachers.

General Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Substitute assists with ongoing assessment of children during class and with individualized curriculum planning and curriculum related paperwork for one hour after class.
2. Substitute acts as the Teacher II in the classroom. This includes: doing circle time, singing, transitions, reading stories, and participating with children in learning centers. Must also assist teacher with behavior management and other classroom tasks as assigned by teacher.
3. Substitute will participate in classroom setup and cleanup, curriculum planning and preparation, and brainstorming during the full 35 hours that the regular staff member would normally work.
4. Substitute participates with the teacher in home visits and parent teacher conferences as needed.
5. Substitute assists in maintaining accurate education, social service and health records, and contact logs under the direction of the Teachers.
6. Assists in keeping children safe, healthy, and well supervised in the classroom and on the playground.
7. Models positive classroom management and promotes respect for all children and adults.
8. Models appropriate hand washing, tooth brushing, and table manners for the children.
9. Will accept other duties assigned by the designated supervisor or coordinators.

Required Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or GED required.
2. Must be supportive of the Head Start regulations and the SUU Head Start vision, policies, and procedures.
3. Must be willing to abide by the SUU Head Start Code of Conduct.
4. Must demonstrate ability to work respectfully with low-income children and families, those with special needs, and families with diverse ethnic backgrounds.
5. Must be willing to have name checked with the BCI database and must not have a substantiated case of child abuse on record.
6. Must show proof of a TB test and medical exam which demonstrates physical ability to do the job and no risk from communicable disease.
7. Must be willing and able to implement the SUU approach to individualizing curriculum development.
8. Must be able to work in a team with agency representatives, parents, coordinators, Family Advocate, teachers, and other professionals to meet the needs of the children and families served.
9. Must attend in-service training held during the time they act as long term sub as required.

In accordance with Utah State Code 53B-1-110, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with young children in Head Start, preschool, and/or other setting highly preferred but not required.
2. Ability to speak and write Spanish desired but not required.
