Job Title Math Specialist
Job Description

Coordinate the math program within Student Support Services. Working with the director and other staff members, identify students needing mathematics and other academic support who are eligible for and who can benefit from the program. Collaborate with other staff to develop a quality math tutoring program. Maintain contact with the SUU Math/Computer Science Department. Collect appropriate data on math students served.

General Duties & Responsibilities

1. Diagnose problems students are having in math and help develop solutions to those problems.
2. Teach Math 1010, Math 1030 and Math 1050 each semester
3. Provide supportive counseling; refer students to resources within the project as needed.
4. Coordinate services to students with the SSS Director.
5. Record student progress, contacts, and grades.
6. Provide counseling and advisement to those students interested in a math minor or major.
7. Help interview and hire Math Tutors for math lab; help provide tutor training.
8. Attend relevant professional training.
9. Attend SSS staff meetings; design and implement strategies to help “at risk” students.
10. Maintain contact with SUU Math Department faculty.
11. Work with math placement where appropriate.

Required Qualifications

1. Master’s Degree in mathematics or a Master’s Degree in a related field with at least 18 graduate hours in mathematics.
2. A minimum of two years’ experience teaching college level or high school mathematics.
3. Ability to teach developmental math; ability to work with math anxious students.
4. Experience working with disadvantaged students.
5. Ability to teach concepts and relate well with students.
6. Tutor training expertise.

In accordance with Utah State Code 53B-1-110, appointment to this position is contingent upon the successful passing of a background check.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience with conducting tutor training.
2. Successful experience working with the population of students enrolled in SSS.
3. College-level teaching experience preferred.
4. Curriculum/program development experience preferred.
5. Good counseling and communication skills preferred; ability to teach math
