Job Description

Southern Utah University welcomes applicants for online teaching positions in a variety of disciplines. Our online adjunct faculty expertly deliver courses with the highest level of student focus and commitment to sound online teaching and learning. 

When courses are available, contracts are offered to online adjuncts which begin and end within one semester.

General Duties & Responsibilities

Typically, online adjunct faculty teach one to two online courses per semester, and in some cases may be offered a third. Teaching assignments are offered as needed, when classes are available based on enrollments. This varies from semester to semester. Courses are designed and ready for teaching and require only basic setup, with little to no design work unless specifically assigned. 

There is need for adjuncts to teach both undergraduate and graduate level online courses. 



Currently SUU seeks the following discipline specialties: 

  • ALTERNATIVE ROUTE TO LICENSURE
    A Ph.D. in Education is required for all ARL subjects; either Ph.D. or Masters degree must be in a field relevant related to the ARL subject content area for which the applicant wishes to adjunct.

BIOLOGY
Masters in a biological field or 18 graduate level credits in biology, required.

  • CERTIFICATE/ENDORSEMENT PROGRAMS
    An earned doctorate is strongly preferred for all certificate/endorsement program subjects. In certain cases a Masters degree may be used, and must be in a field relevant to the endorsement program for which the applicant wishes to adjunct.

  • CORPORATE ONLINE TRAINING
    • MBA or equivalent degree required.
    • Current employment in the field of corporate training required.
    • Experience with development/delivery of online training required.
  • EDUCATION ENDORSEMENTS
    A Ph.D. is required for all endorsement subjects; either Ph.D. or Masters degree must be in a field relevant to the endorsement program for which the applicant wishes to adjunct.

    • English Language Acquisition (ELAD) and Development (TESOL accepted)
  • ENTREPRENEURSHIP
    • Masters in relevant field required, Ph.D. preferred.
  • GEOGRAPHY
    • Masters in Geography required.
  • GEOLOGY
    • Ph.D. in Geology required.
  • LIBRARY MEDIA
    • MLS from accredited program required.
    • Prior teaching experience preferred.
    • Adjunct will teach general education Information Literacy course online.
  • MARKETING RESEARCH
    • Masters in relevant field required, Ph.D. preferred.
  • MATHEMATICS
    • Masters in Mathematics required.
    • Prior online teaching experience preferred.
  • MUSIC TECHNOLOGY
    • Master’s degree in Music or a field closely related to Music Technology. Ph.D. preferred. In some cases, professional experience may substitute for academic training or degrees 
    • Significant professional experience in the fields of recording engineering, live sound, concert production, music business
    • Significant experience/training in the tools used in contemporary music production, including Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Digital Performer, Ableton Live, Sibelius, and/or Finale. Experience with Adobe Premiere preferred.
    • Experience in college/university level classroom as a teacher, lab technician, or visiting artist
  • ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP
    • Ph. D. in a relevant field is required.
  • PHYSICS
    • Ph.D. in Physics required.
  • PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT
    • Masters degree or Ph.D. required.
  • THEME PARK MANAGEMENT
    • MBA or related degree required.
    • Experience working as a supervisor/manager in the theme (amusement) park industry. Currently employed as such preferred.
Required Qualifications

Qualifications vary between disciplines. In general, online adjunct faculty should have profound experience in the field they are applying to teach, and, have an earned graduate degree, at minimum one level above the level applied to teach within. Certifications and so forth, may in some cases/disciplines and at the discretion of SUU, be used as a substitute for a graduate degree. 

An ideal candidate will be currently working full time in the field they intend to teach within. Active participation in respective professional associations and conference attendance is a great advantage.
